"—As Albert Camus once said, “I rebel; therefore we exist,” thus goes my life. My defiance lies in my quest to rise above all obstacles, and not just to rise alone, but to pull along those who like me contend with other circumstances. I grew up in the inner city of Detroit where my family influenced me to not only know how wide the world is but to also strive for the finer things in life. Like my grandfather who composed his own music traveled the country playing; a man who beat insurmountable odds to become a writer and cartoonist; I, too, follow my passions of planning, learning, and helping people. I believe that in as much as we’re all human, we are unique in our own rights. I believe that each one of us is a complex artist and as artists, our sole purpose is to use the genius in us to heal the world. We all sometimes have those moments when it feels like a lightbulb goes off that makes us want to get up and do something extraordinary. But…sometimes we are our worst enemies. Fear, insecurities, and the drudgery of life holds back our inner genius. I have rebelled against that complacency. I won’t let the extraordinaire slip through my fingers. —I work as a financial educator in Michigan. My responsibility entails helping teachers make sound financial decisions. However, teachers in Detroit have been fighting for better employment conditions and have so far had their share of battles with the government. Every time I set out to lay a financial plan for my clients, I am confronted by the fact that I cannot advise anyone of them unless I truly get to understand each one of their struggles. Therefore, throughout my career, I have gone beyond just being a financial advisor to being a friend to the teachers, a mentor to their students, but above all, I have used my art to showcase their struggles. If a click of my lens can help elevate the voices of the teachers in Michigan, then I will keep doing this for as long as I live. View Witness Series here (https://www.myartmyrules.com/witness/) —Apart from being a financial educator, I am also the manager of three talented, unsigned artists. Clear Soul Forces, Cel, and KB are exceptionally talented rebels in their own way. I have directed their videos, managed their outreach and day to day affairs, and basically been there as a pillar of support. My dream for KB and Cel is for them to reach their goals and share their music with the whole world. We have a very vibrant music scene in Detroit, but we still get overshadowed by bigger markets like LA, NYC and Atlanta; and even though we make innovative music it still gets lost in the shuffle. My dream is to put Detroit back in the spotlight and that’s what I am hoping to accomplish here. —I believe creating and learning to go hand and hand. I taught myself photography since I realized early that I had a natural eye behind the lens. Indeed, no natural talent gets far without learning and relearning. A strict work ethic is also important in achieving goals. I practice my craft every single day—I basically live it. I have learned that having that passion for doing something small for the greater good of the universe is paramount. With everything that is happening around the world, I have always felt like a small hummingbird working alone to put off a huge forest fire, and sometimes I have been discouraged. However, my life goals speak deeply to me—in turn, these challenges may be the motivation to create my extraordinary.
